This training is one of 5 modules comprising the Coalition’s Fundamentals of Advocacy Training Institute and counts toward the 40 hours of foundational training required of all direct-service staff employed within Nebraska’s network of sexual and domestic violence victim service programs.

The training is appropriate for anyone PROVIDING DIRECT SERVICES to survivors of intimate partner violence, sexual violence, stalking, and/or human trafficking.

LOCATION:
This module will be conducted virtually via Zoom Meeting. Registration is required. Access details will be provided upon registration.

TECHNOLOGY ACCESS REQUIREMENTS:
The training will highly participatory involving small- and large-group discussion and virtual activities. AUDIO AND VIDEO CAPABILITIES ARE REQUIRED (i.e. participant must join by phone or have access to a computer microphone) and video capabilities are strongly encouraged.

TRAINING SUMMARY & OBJECTIVES:
This module will cover the dynamics of sexual violence generally and dynamics specific to sexual violence in prison; the effects of sexual trauma; and skills for engaging and supporting survivors of sexual trauma, including those in the community and those who are incarcerated.

Objectives:
• Define sexual violence and related terms and identify types of sexual violence (e.g. harassment, assault)
• Define consent and explain “affirmative consent” as it relates to sexual activity
• Describe tactics individuals use to facilitate sexual violence, including substance facilitated sexual assault
• Describe the impact of sexual violence on victims/survivors, including common responses, short- and long-term reactions, possible needs and concerns, coping strategies, and considerations for healing.
• Describe and demonstrate strategies for engaging with and supporting victims/survivors of sexual trauma.
• Understand the goal of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) and describe the advocate role in implementing standards.
• Understand the dynamics of prison culture and explain how this might impact an incarcerated survivor’s experience, response, and healing process.
• Understand the intersection between those who are survivors and those who harm.
• Understand similarities and differences between working with survivors in the prison and working with survivors in the community.
• Understand bias and fear that advocates may experience in working with survivors who also harm.
