Super Support Groups: Engaging Survivor Leadership in Support Groups (Session 1)

This session is the first of two. You must register for each session to attend.

Support groups can be wonderful healing spaces for survivors, and incorporating peer support can make the experience even more meaningful.

In this session, Andrea Poston will share her experience building survivor leadership within support groups. Andrea will discuss how to build trauma-sensitive environments and practices within the support group, how to move a survivor’s role from client to leadership, and the variety of leadership roles a survivor can take within the support group.

Please come ready to listen and ask any questions you may have about opportunities for survivor leadership in support groups.

About the Trainer: Andrea Poston
Andrea Poston is a survivor of multiple traumas in her childhood as well as adult life and a survivor leader in the community. She is a survivor of multiple suicide attempts and constant suicide ideation in her adult life. She struggles with PTSD, Borderline Personality Disorder, and a Dissociative Disorder due to the trauma she has experienced. She runs a Women’s group alongside her therapist in Omaha Nebraska called Safest Place for people who struggle with some of the same issues. She consults as a survivor leader for multiple organizations including the Women’s Fund of Omaha, Heartland Family Services, and Magdalene of Omaha to raise awareness, provide training, facilitate support groups, and much more. Her current career field is a Professional Life Coach, Peer Support Group Facilitator, and Independent Consultant. She is in the process of obtaining her master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. Andrea has presented to academic researchers from across the country at human trafficking conferences and she advocates for legislative policy with the Nebraska legislature to support survivors of trafficking.
