You may register for this training ONLY if you provide direct advocacy to Survivors of Domestic Violence, Sexual Violence, or Human Trafficking.
Fundamentals of Advocacy is a training hosted by the Nebraska Coalition to End Sexual and Domestic Violence which provides an overview of domestic violence, sexual violence, stalking and related issues. There are 5 training Modules which make up the full Fundamentals of Advocacy Training series. Each Module will be 1 day in length and may require PRE-WORK which will need to be completed prior to the face to face training day.
Fundamentals of Advocacy is offered for FREE to staff and volunteers who provide direct services to Survivors from member local domestic and sexual violence programs in Nebraska and staff from tribal domestic violence/sexual assault programs.
If you are an advocate who provides direct services to Survivors and are not a member of the local program membership there will be a $45 REGISTRATION FEE. Please be prepared to pay your registration fee through the website registration process. (Refunds for canceled registrations will only be able to be made until 2 weeks prior to the event. Anything past 2 weeks prior to the training will not be refunded.)
For All registrants all other costs associated with the training are the responsibility of the participant (i.e. mileage, hotel, meals, parking, etc.)

This training module is part of the Coalitions Fundamentals of Advocacy Training Institute and counts toward the 40 hours of fundamental training required of all direct-service staff employed within Nebraska’s network of SV/DV victim service programs. It is open to staff and volunteers from network programs and tribal sv/dv programs. This module will cover the dynamics of sexual violence generally and dynamics specific to sexual violence in prison; the effects of sexual trauma; and skills for engaging and supporting survivors of sexual trauma, including those in the community and those who are incarcerated.
Objectives:
• Define sexual violence and related terms and identify types of sexual violence (e.g. harassment, assault)
• Define consent and explain “affirmative consent” as it relates to sexual activity
• Describe tactics individuals use to facilitate sexual violence, including substance facilitated sexual assault
• Describe the impact of sexual violence on victims/survivors, including common responses, short- and long-term reactions, possible
needs and concerns, coping strategies, and considerations for healing.
• Describe and demonstrate strategies for engaging with and supporting victims/survivors of sexual trauma.
• Understand the goal of the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA) and describe the advocate role of implementing standards.
• Understand the dynamics of prison culture and explain how this might impact an incarcerated survivor’s experience, response, and
healing process.
• Understand the intersection between those who are survivors and those who harm.
• Understand similarities and differences between working with survivors in the prison and working with survivors in the community.
• Understand bias and fear that advocates may experience in working with survivors who also harm.
